aboutHip Bursitis

Hip Bursitis is an inflammatory condition that typically affects the bursa (fluid sac) which lays over the Greater Trochanter.

It is much more common in ladies and typically affects sleep; with pain increasing when the person lays on their affected side.

There are other bursa around the hip joint and other conditions which can generate a similar pain experience.

As with all conditions a diagnosis is the first step to best management.

aboutHip Bursitis

Greater Trochanteric Bursitis is a condition where the bursa that lays over the outside edge of the hip bone becomes inflamed.

There are other bursa, such as the Gluteal and Psoa Bursa which are deeper in the hip and pelvic area which can also become inflamed, but the Trochanteric bursa is the most common irritation.

It typically affects ladies and can be a significant source of irritation. When trying to keep fit or enjoy an active lifestyle, the mechanical stress over the hip joint is increased and consequebntly the bursa can begin to rub and become inflamed.

Rest and modification of activities is an essential part of rehabilitation. Posture and patterns of movement, if improved, can decrease the mechanical strain on the bursa and help both settle the condition and prevent re-poccurance.

When symptoms are bad the pain can be felt down the entire leg and is often mistaken for a back problem with patient thinking they have 'sciatica'.

Guided injections can be part of treatment options to help decrease inflammation. Exercises and postural correction forms the mainstay of rehabilitation.

The process is similar for other forms of Bursitis, but the exercises will need to be modified to gain the best outcome.I
