abouthallux limitus

Hallux Limitus refers to limited movement in the big toe. The joint becomes restricted due to bony spurs or joint degeneration.

These changes cause an inflammatory tissue response and walking is often painful.

Once a diagnosis is established treatment options include changes to footwear, gentle exercises, steroid injections or even surgery.

abouthallux limitus

Hallux Limitus refers to limited movement in the big toe. Hallux Rigidus simply refers to a complete lack of movement and Hallux Valgus is commonly known as a bunion.

All these problems affect walking because we need a good range of movement in our big toes to push off the ground.

When the joint is stiff, movement restricted and inflammation is causing pain, we will typically walk with a limp.

To protect the joint firm soled shoes are appropriate. Injections of cortico-steroid can decrease inflammation and gentle exercises to mobilise the toe joint are effective treatments.

If the level of bony change and degeneration is severe then surgery to shave off the bony spurs, re-align the joint or replace the entire joint or fuse the joint are all valid surgical considerations.
